One Billion Tweets Are Sent Out on a Weekly Basis
We all know that Twitter is a popular social networking and micro-blogging service, just like we all know that YouTube is a popular video sharing site and Google is a popular search engine. Further proof of Twitter’s popularity was offered yesterday by Carolyn Penner, Twitter Communications. She announced to the world that it now takes Twitter users only one week to send out 1 billion tweets.

That wasn’t always the case. Sure, Twitter is now so popular that 1 billion tweets are sent out on a weekly basis, but getting from tweet #1 to tweet #1 billion took more than 3 years.

Carolyn Penner explained that the first tweet was sent on the 21st of March 2006 by Jack Dorsey, Creator, Co-founder and Chairman of Twitter. At the time it was a lonely tweet. 3 years, 2 months, and 1 day later, there were 1 billion tweets out there. 3 years, 2 months, 1 day is the time it took to get from tweet #1 up to tweet #1 billion.

A few other interesting Twitter usage statistics were made public by Penner. She explained that:
- One year ago, 50 million tweets were sent each day.
- In the last month, the average number of tweets people sent per day was of 140 million.
- On June 25, 2009, the day that Michael Jackson died, 456 tweets per second were sent out.
- 6,939 tweets per second were sent out 4 seconds after midnight in Japan on New Year’s Day. On March 11, the day of the tragic earthquake in Japan, 177 million tweets were sent out. On March 12, 572,000 new accounts were created.
- On average, 460,000 new Twitter accounts have been created each day in the last month.

The number of Twitter users and the number of tweets has increased considerably since 2006, and the figures above prove it. But that’s isn’t the only thing that’s increased – the number of Twitter employees has gone up as well. If back in January 2008 Twitter counted only 8 employees, it now counts 400 employees.
