Install and test new software in Protected Mode. While testing all changes, including system registry and OS configuration data, are recorded so that the changes can be uninstalled. If the results are not satisfactory, just rollback to exactly the configuration before Protected Mode started -- even if Windows cannot boot! Otherwise, if everything testsout fine, just keep the changes.
