10th Beta Version of Firefox 4 Is Out
The Mozilla foundation has released yet another version of the Firefox 4 web browser, mainly Firefox 4 Beta 10 which comes with compatibility and stability improvements when using Adobe Flash on Mac OS X, memory usage improvements, and support for a graphics driver blacklist to improve stability. It follows in the footsteps of Firefox 4 Beta 9 which came with an overhauled bookmarks and history code (which translates to faster startup times and faster bookmarking) and enabled per-compartment garbage collection (which translates to reduced work during complex animations).

This latest Beta release is available for download in 76 languages for or Windows, Linux and Mac users. You can get the version for your operating system in your favorite language here.

Mozilla would very much like you to get the browser and put it to the test. It said so on its blog yesterday, blog post titled “Test Firefox 4 Beta, Help US Make it Better.” In the blog post Mozilla said that Firefox 4 Beta 10 “continues our work to improve performance and stability” and that “we couldn’t do this without the help of our millions of beta testers and their feedback, which we welcome as we continue to improve and polish Firefox 4 Beta to ensure we deliver an awesome experience to our 400 million users around the world.”

If you know what Beta testing is all about, if you understand the consequences, then by all means go ahead – get the Beta and put it through its paces. If you’re clueless about what Beta testing is all about, then it’s best to wait for the final version. Unless you know what you’re getting yourself into, it’s best to stay away from Beta releases as they may crash, not function properly, “eat your data and burn your house down” as Mozilla Evangelist Christopher Blizzard jokingly said once.

Hopefully you will not have to wait long for the final version to be released. According to Platform Engineering Director Damon Sicore, the final version of Firefox 4 has to be out by next month.
"We've worked tremendously hard on Firefox 4, and it's time to ship it. I'm seeing the same burst of excitement and activity that we've seen in the endgame of every release. We have to reach Release Candidate status as quickly as possible, ideally finishing the hard blockers by the beginning of February and shipping final before the end of February," said Sicore.
