Alien Arena 7.51 Is Out
The freeware, first-person shooter, deathmatch game Alien Arena 7.51 has been released, the development team behind the game recently announced. Users of the Microsoft-developed Windows operating system as well as users of the open source Linux operating system can get the game and get their shooting on – free of charge.

With Alien Arena 7.51 the team behind the game focused on fixing some problems that were plaguing version 7.50, focused on implementing AutoTools, focused on creating and adding three new levels, and focused on these other new features:
  • Extensive rewrite of bsp surface rendering for a massive performance increase.
  • Complete rewrite of vertex buffer object code.
  • Complete rewrite of post process effects.
  • Improvements to shadow mapping for dynamic shadows.
  • Variety of graphical updates and bugfixes.
  • Added downloading of iqm meshes.

If you are not familiar with Alien Arena, here’s the lowdown. First introduced to the public back in October 2004, it is a freeware online deathmatch game. Proof that it is a properly good game are the facts that it has been downloaded more than 1 million, the fact that after reviewing the game Linux.com called it one of the best free FPS games you could play, and the fact that it was featured on the covers of numerous magazines, including PC Gamer.

“The goal of Alien Arena was to create the perfect marriage between Quake and Unreal Tournament, between retro sci-fi and futuristic tech, and between casual gamer and advanced expert, and wrap it up in a package with quality that could rival that of commercial games. Alien Arena is a furious frag fest with arenas ranging from the small, to the massive,” says part of the game’s description. You can find the full description here. If that is not enough, you can view a trailer on YouTube here.
