Angry Birds Rio: 20th Century Fox and Rovio Mobile Partner Up
“When Blu, a domesticated macaw from small-town Minnesota, meets the fiercely independent Jewel, he takes off on an adventure to Rio de Janeiro with this bird of his dreams.” That’s the brief presentation IMDb has for Rio, a 20th Century Fox animation, adventure, comedy movie that is scheduled to be on the 15th of April in the US.

The longer presentation of the movie, as detailed by 20th Century Fox, goes something like this. Blu, a domesticated Macaw who never learned to fly, and Linda, Blu’s owner and best friend, think that Blu is the last of his kind. They find out that there’s another Macaw in Rio de Janeiro called Jewel. So Blu and Linda go to Rio de Janeiro. A group of bungling animal smugglers then kidnap Blu and Jewel. After Blu and Jewel escape their kidnappers, thanks to Jewel’s street smarts and a group of wise-cracking and smooth-talking city birds, Blu has to find the courage to learn to fly, thwart the kidnappers who are hot on their trail, and return to Linda.

Before the Rio movie comes out, Angry Birds Rio will be released. Rovio Mobile, the developer of the hugely popular Angry Birds game, and 20th Century Fox, one of the six major American film studios, have announced that they entered a partnership with the goal of uniting the Angry Birds game with the Rio animated feature film. The fruits of this partnership will be revealed this March when Angry Birds Rio will be released to the public.

Angry Birds Rio will feature 45 dedicated levels when it will be rolled out. New levels will be added via app updates. In the Angry Birds Rio game the original Angry Birds are kidnapped and taken to the magical city of Rio. After escaping their captors, the angry birds set out to save Blue and Jewel.

“Angry Birds Rio is a match made in heaven for a mobile application and a major motion picture, and this collaboration with Fox is definitely one the most exciting partnerships we have entered into with the ANGRY BIRDS brand to date,” said CEO of Rovio Mobile, Mikael Hed. “In addition to expanding the horizons of two fantastic entertainment brands and creating a great new gaming experience, we have also taken the concept of combining a mobile application and motion picture promotion to an entirely new level.”

“In partnering with Rovio, we are combining the world’s hottest application developer with one of the motion picture industry’s premier creative forces to introduce the millions of fans of ANGRY BIRDS to the exciting world of RIO,” said President of New Media and Digital Distribution for 20th Century Fox, Peter Levinsohn. “Our relationship with Rovio is another great example of Fox Digital Entertainment’s continuing work to extend our content to a variety of digital platforms.”
