August '10 Patch Tuesday: 14 Bulletins, 34 Vulnerabilities
UPDATE August 11: Details on the 14 security bulletins mentioned below are available here .

Tomorrow, the 10th of August, is the second Tuesday of the month. This means that Redmond-based software giant Microsoft will be rolling out updates for its products as part of the Patch Tuesday program. For the August ’10 Patch Tuesday Microsoft will roll out a record number of bulletins – 14 bulletins to be more precise (an advance notification for the August security bulletin release has been posted online by Microsoft here).

As Microsoft explained, these 14 security bulletins are meant to plug a grand total of 34 vulnerabilities that plague the company’s Windows operating system, the Office productivity suite, the Internet Explorer web browser, and the Silverlight web application framework. Out of the 14 security bulletins, 8 have been deemed critical while 6 have been classified as important.

As mentioned before, Microsoft will roll out a record number of bulletins during the August 2010 Patch Tuesday. More on this from Security Response Communications Manager, Angela Gunn: “For those who keep track of such things, this will be the most bulletins we have ever released in a month; we have released 13 bulletins on a couple of occasions. However, in total CVE count, this release ties with June 2010, so there's no new record there.”

To put things in perspective, here are the bulletins Microsoft rolled out this year as part of the Patch Tuesday program:
  • In January Microsoft released just 1 security bulletin (6 vulnerabilities).
  • In February Microsoft released a grand total of 13 security bulletins (26 vulnerabilities).
  • In March Microsoft released only 2 bulletins (8 vulnerabilities).
  • In April Microsoft released a total of 11 bulletins (25 vulnerabilities).
  • In May Microsoft released just 2 bulletins (2 vulnerabilities).
  • In June Microsoft released a grand total of 10 bulletins (34 vulnerabilities).
  • In July Microsoft released 4 bulletins (5 vulnerabilities).
