CityVille: Zynga's Most Social Game Ever a Big Success
Back in November we were reporting that Zynga, the social network games developer best known for the popular Facebook games FarmVille and FrontierVille, is working on a new game called CityVille. Zynga said that CityVille, a game that combines Monopoly and Main Street, or FarmVille and The Sims, would be its “most social game to date”.

The CityVille game, as Zynga explained at the time, would allow players to create an entire city from scratch. Players would get to build roads and homes and schools and parks and other things of the sort – not plain 2D buildings, but good looking 3D ones. Players earn money by trading with other cities, by collecting rent, or by using Facebook credits to purchase in-game rent.

The CityVille game went live last week, to the delight of numerous, numerous players all over the world. Since Zynga’s other games are already quite popular, it comes as no surprise that CityVille became an instant hit. What does come as a surprise is the large number of players who rushed to try the game out.

290,000 players tried the game out in the first 24 hours after its launch. FrontierVille, another Zynga-developed game, did not even half that in the first 24 hours after its launch – only 116,000 players tried FrontierVille in one day. Despite the less successful launch, FrontierVille does have 6.5 million daily and roughly 30 million monthly players right now. How many active players does CityVille have? According to Zynga there are 1.2 million monthly active players, but that number will definitely increase once the cross-game marketing strategy for CityVille in games like FarmVille and FrontierVille is rolled out.

Zynga calls the launch of CityVille it’s most successful game launch ever. All the CityVille players built:
  • 2.7 million residences
  • 500,000+ bakeries
  • 5 million sections of road.
