Facebook and McAfee Strike Deal, Users Get Free Security Software
It seems that popular social networking site Facebook cares about convenience as well as security. On the convenience front, we’ve recently reported on the fact that you can reply to comments posted on Facebook via the notification email you receive in your inbox – read all about it here. To address the security needs of the hundreds of millions of Facebook users, Facebook has struck a deal with MacAfee, company that specializes in providing security software solutions for home and business users.

The Facebook user will get quite a lot out of this deal. To get things started, Facebook users will get McAfee's Internet Security Suite software free of charge. When the 6 month freebie is over, Facebook users will be able to get a discount subscription – they’ll have to pay for the software, but at least not full price. And to top things off, Facebook users will also get custom security software and education materials on their favorite social networking site – this is to say McAfee will publish security content of Facebook’s security page.

“By partnering with a market leader like McAfee, we are taking an unprecedented step towards making the entire Internet more secure and reducing the possibility of threats being brought onto our service by unsuspecting users,” said Elliot Schrage, vice president of global communications, marketing and public policy, Facebook. “Keeping the Internet secure requires that users, security vendors and Internet companies all work together. We think we’ve developed an excellent model for this collaboration, and to ensure the greatest possible value to our users, Facebook will not accept any revenue from subscriptions. We hope this is something that other services will emulate.”

“Facebook is very serious about security and has made significant efforts to protect its users and service by investing in dedicated teams and sophisticated systems, and this partnership with McAfee furthers that mission,” said Todd Gebhart, executive vice president and general manager, McAfee Consumer, Mobile and Small Business. “We believe our partnership will make a real difference in the battle to secure the Internet by giving so many more people access to industry leading technology from McAfee.”
  • Facebook users that want to get McAfee's Internet Security Suite software free of charge need to visit the Protect your PC tab on the McAfee Page.
  • Facebook users that want to be kept up-to-date on the latest threats can become a fan of the Facebook Security Page.
