Previously known as “Fennec”, Firefox for Mobile is Firefox’s little brother, a browser version designed by the Mozilla Foundation to run on mobile devices – like for example Nokia mobile phones. The development team behind Fennec – excuse me, Firefox for Mobile – has recently announced that the browser has reached a very important milestone in its development process. To be more precise, Firefox 1.0 for Maemo (the software and development platform used by Nokia) has been released as a final, stable software application.

Nokia N810 and N900 users can now enjoy the Firefox experience on their mobile device. All they have to do is visit firefox.com/m on their mobile device to download Firefox for Mobile. The mobile version of the Firefox browser comes with all the goodies you’ve come to expect from the Firefox browser – AwesomeBar, Weave Sync, add-ons, location-aware browsing, tabbed browsing, safe browsing, and support for more than 30 languages.
Out of all the various browsers you can use on your mobile device, Firefox is the only one that supports add-ons. Just like with the desktop version, you can use add-on to customize the browser, to add features, to change the browser’s looks, and so on. For the time being there are about 40 add-ons available (see here), but that number is constantly increasing.
The Mozilla Foundation plans to provide a version of Firefox for Mobile for other platforms, mainly Android and Windows Mobile. There are no plans to develop Firefox for iPhone, for Blackberry or for Symbian.
