Galactic Inbox: A HTML5 Game in Honor of Gmail
Gmail is the free, ad-supported email service provided by Mountain View-based search engine giant Google. With more than 176 million users (on a monthly basis, according to December 2009 statistics) you can safely say that Gmail is a very popular email service. One of the reasons Gmail is so popular is the fact that it continues to get better and better over time.

Google has recently rolled out multiple account sign-in for Gmail, allowing the user to sign into two Gmail accounts from the same browser window, then toggle between them from the new accounts menu in the upper right hand corner of Gmail. Or open a tab for one account, and another for the secondary account – all in the same browser.

Another Gmail enhancement that deserves mentioning here is the email client’s ability to attach files by dragging and dropping them, or its ability to save attachments locally by dragging and dropping them (see here).

To show his appreciation Creative Technologist with Google, Paul Truong, came up with a fun HTML game called Galactic Inbox. You can play the game directly in your browser, assuming of course you are using one that supports HTML5. In the game you fly an M-velope and shoot down the bad guys.

“Webmail has come a long way in the past few years but it’s all too easy to take for granted practically unlimited inbox capacities and responsive interfaces backed by the power of search. While I’m not on the Gmail team, I felt a little celebration of how far we’ve come was in order, so I wrote a little HTML5 game, in part as a "thank you" to the Gmail team for their ongoing work to improve the webmail galaxy,” commented Truong.

If you would like to give the game a try, just click here. Again, you can only play the game in a modern browser that supports HTML5 (so no IE6). Here are some screenshots to get your taste buds going.
