Google Acquires Green Parrot Pictures, Wants to Expand YouTube Team
Here are a couple of YouTube-related news that go well together. Popular video sharing site YouTube, as many of you already know, is owned by Google. Here comes the first news: Google has acquired Green Parrot Pictures, a digital video technology company founded by Associate Professor Anil Kokaram at the Engineering School of Trinity College in Dublin, Ireland.

The acquisition of Green Parrot is good news for YouTube. Now that Google acquired Green Parrot Pictures, it has access to the cutting-edge video quality improvement technology the company has been working on for the past six years. The Green Parrot Pictures technology can be used to sharpen the image, reduce visual noise, and generally improve the quality of video footage.

“Their technology helps make videos look better while at the same time using less bandwidth and improving playback speed,” said Jeremy Doig, Director, Google Video Technology. “With the equivalent of over 170,000 full-length movies uploaded to YouTube every week, the team’s experience in this area -- working on solutions for both video consumers and experts alike -- will be a source of new ideas and further innovation at YouTube and across Google. We look forward to working with them to make the videos you upload every minute of every day to our site look even better.”

Green Parrot Pictures is quite happy that Google acquired it. An announcement on the Green Parrot Pictures site says that “we’re excited to join Google, where we will apply our expertise to improve the online video experience for hundreds of millions of users worldwide on many different products, platforms, and services.”

And now here’s the second YouTube-related news: just like Skype, Google wants to expand the YouTube team this year. This is the year when you could get a job on the YouTube team. Jeff Ferguson, YouTube HR, announced that “we plan to grow the number of people working at YouTube by more than 30% (!), making it the largest hiring year in YouTube’s history.” Details on the YouTube job openings are available here .
