Google Maps for BlackBerry Catches Up to Android Version
Last month Google announced the release of Google Maps 4.2 for Android, version which came with a bunch of new features. Google has now announced that it rolled out Google Maps 4.2 for BlackBerry, bringing the functionality of Google Maps 4.2 to BlackBerry users as well.
As I mentioned above, there are several new features available in Google Maps 4.2 for BlackBerry. The first one is biking directions. Biking directions were added to Google Maps (the desktop version) back in March. Since then, the team behind Google Maps for mobile has been hard at work trying to port the same type of functionality first to the Android and now to the BlackBerry.

“If you’ve been using Google Maps on your computer to get biking directions, trails, and lanes, you can now head out for a ride using just your BlackBerry. When getting directions in Google Maps, just choose to travel by bicycle to get an optimal bicycling route in the U.S. If you’re in the mood for a more scenic ride, you’ll also see the Bicycling layer on the map which shows dedicated bike-only trails (dark green), roads with bike lanes (light green), or roads that are good for biking but lack a dedicated lane (dashed green),” explained Product Manager on the Google Mobile Team, Michael Siliski.
A redesigned list view of search results is another feature you can expect to get from Google Maps 4.2 for BlackBerry. When you search for something on your mobile device, you will notice the list view of results has been redesigned – it now features pictures and ratings. Select a search result and you will see a simplified search results page with easy-access buttons for directions, calling, and so on.
If you find a cool place, you can share it with your friends - this is yeat another new feature. You can send a specific place’s info by email or text message via the new “share this place” option. You can share any location - a bar, a restaurant, or the place where you are right now.
If you would like to get Google Maps 4.2 for BlackBerry, simply fire up the device’s browser and go to m.google.com/maps. Additional information on Google Maps for mobile is available here.
