Google Once Again Explains What a Browser Is
Back in the summer of 2009, Google took to the streets in an attempt to find out if people now what a browser is. So Google went to Times Square and asked all sorts of people the question “What is a browser?” The Mountain View-based search engine giant was surprised to find out that people cannot tell the browser and the search engine apart. What did Google do? It rolled out the WhatBrowser.org site and created a 1 minute video entitled What is a browser?

Google has once again taken a shot at explaining what a browser is. This time Google has put together an interesting HTML5 ebook that talks about browser technology. The ebook is called “20 Things I Learned about Browser and the Web” and is available online at 20thingsilearned.com.

The ebook, which looks incredibly good by the way, aims to provide answers to questions like how to browsers work, what is HTML5, what is cloud computing, what are cookies, or how do we stay safe online?

“We built “20 Things” in HTML5 so that we could incorporate features that hearken back to what we love about books—feeling the heft of a book’s cover, flipping a page or even reading under the covers with a flashlight. In fact, once you’ve loaded “20 Things” in the browser, you can disconnect your laptop and continue reading, since this guidebook works offline. As such, this illustrated guidebook is best experienced in Chrome or any up-to-date, HTML5-compliant modern browser,” commented Product Marketing Manager with Google Chrome, Min Li Chan.

You can read the “20 Things I Learned about Browsers and the Web” ebook in Chrome, Firefox 3.6, Opera 10.6 and IE9 Beta - not IE8, because IE8 does not support HTML5. To give IE8 HTML5 capabilities you would have to get the open-source Google Chrome Frame plug-in which graduated out of Beta this September.
