Google Revamps Image Search
Mountain View-based search engine giant Google is on a revamp spree. The well-known company revamped its homepage Google.com, revamped the popular video sharing site YouTube (which is owned by Google, in case you didn’t know), revamped Google News, and now it has revamped Google Image Search as well.

You may already be able to see the revamped version of Google Image Search on images.google.com. Then again you may not see the changes Google made just yet because the revamped version is being rolled out gradually.

“These upgrades are rolling out in most of our local interfaces worldwide over the next few days. We hope they not only make it easier to search for images, but also contribute to a better aesthetic experience. We see images as a major source of inspiration, a way of connecting the world—and their growth is showing no signs of slowing down. We’ll work to make sure Google Images continues to evolve to keep up,” commented Product Manager with Google Images, Nate Smith.

Whether you have access to the revamped version of Google Image Search or not, here’s what’s changed:
  • New tile layout
Search results are laid out in a “dense tile” configuration (check out the image at the bottom).
  • New hover pane
When you place the mouse cursor over an image, a larger preview pops up and you are provided a few more details about said image (name, size, source URL).
  • Instant scrolling
You no longer have to press the “Next” button. Up to 1,000 images and several results pages are presented in one convenient scrolling page. Simply scroll down and you will move from search results page 1 to page 2, then page 3 and so on. You’ll know on which page you are because Google displays an unobtrusive page number in the left hand side.
  • New lading page
When you click an image in the search results page you will be taken to a new landing page (check out the image at the bottom). On said landing page you will see a large image in context, with the website it’s hosted on visible right behind it. To get to the original page where the image is hosted, click anywhere outside the image (or click the X button from the image’s top right hand corner).
  • Optimized keyboard navigation
“For faster scrolling through many pages, taking advantage of standard web keyboard shortcuts such as Page Up / Page Down. It’s all about getting you to the info you need quickly,” explained Nate Smith.
