Hotmail: Spam is War, but We're Not Quitting
Spam messages are annoying to say the least. Personally, I don’t even bother to look at the few emails that make their way into my inbox, I just hit the delete button. Why do people keep sending out spam? According to Group Program Manager for Windows Live Hotmail, Dick Craddock, money is the big motivator. Spam, as he presents it, is a big business; hence spammers will not just pack up and go. No, they will stay in business. There will always be a battle between the spammers and those who try to keep spam out of the inbox.

“Believe me, spam is a battle. Spammers won’t ever quit, and they are very clever. Spammers are constantly finding new ways to exploit the services that we provide to our customers, to abuse the very system that you use every day to communicate with your friends and family and to conduct your personal business. But we won’t quit, either,” commented Dick Craddock.

Security companies that keep an eye on what’s going on in the internet world say that out of all the emails that are sent over the internet each day, more than 90% are spam. Hotmail has about 350 million active users, so you can imagine that it has a pretty big bull’s-eye drawn right on it. According to Craddock, Hotmail receives about 8 billion emails each and every day and most of them are spam – 5.5 billion to be more precise.

Most of the spam does not reach the inbox of Hotmail users. How much spam is kept out? In Craddock’s own words, “Hotmail removes 98% of all spam before it can even reach your Inbox.” About 110 million spam messages do manage to get though, but if you keep things in perspective, that means fewer than 5% of the messages in your inbox are spam.

If you want to find out more about how spam is kept out of your Hotmail inbox, or how Craddock came up with the numbers presented above, check out this and this post.
