May '10 Patch Tuesday: 2 Bulletins, 2 Critical Vulnerabilities
UPDATE May 12: Details on the May 2010 Patch Tuesday are avaialble here.
On the 11th of May, the second Tuesday of the month, Microsoft will release 2 security bulletins as part of the Patch Tuesday program. This is quite a small release, compared to the April ’10 Patch Tuesday which included a grand total of 11 security bulletins that addressed 25 vulnerabilities in Microsoft Office, Microsoft Windows and Microsoft Exchange. Getting back to this month’s Patch Tuesday, the 2 security bulletins are meant to address 2 vulnerabilities that plague the Microsoft Windows operating system and the Microsoft Office productivity suite. Redmond-based software giant Microsoft classified both vulnerabilities as critical.

“Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 customers will be offered the Windows related update but they are not vulnerable in their default configurations,” explained Senior Security Communications Manager Lead with the MSRC (Microsoft Security Response Center), Jerry Bryant.
Earlier this month Microsoft announced that SharePoint Server 2007 and SharePoint Services 3.0 are plagued by a XSS (cross-site scripting) vulnerability. The vulnerability in question could allow Elevation of Privilege (EoP) within the SharePoint site itself. If exploited by a person with malicious intent, the vulnerability could allow that person to run arbitrary script that could result in the elevation of privilege within the SharePoint site.
Jerry Bryant explained that a fix for the SharePoint vulnerability will not be provided this Tuesday. “Concerning the recent Security Advisory for SharePoint, 983438, we will not be releasing an update for that with the May bulletins. Our teams are still working on an update for that issue. In the meantime, we recommend customers review the advisory and apply the workarounds,” said Bryant.
Security Advisory 983438 which explains how to mitigate the SharePoint vulnerability is available here.
Microsoft said it is not aware of any attacks exploiting this vulnerability in the wild. Still, all customers running SharePoint Server 2007 or SharePoint Services 3.0 should review and apply the mitigations presented in Security Advisory 983438.
