Microsoft couldn’t be happier with the market success Windows 7 is having. Since it released the operating system to the market more than a year ago (Windows 7 hit General Availability on the 22nd of October 2009), Microsoft has sold more than 300 million licenses worldwide.
“To put that in perspective, 300 million is roughly the combined number of households in North American and in Europe! Or, to put it another way, if you lined up 300 million Windows 7 product boxes, they would stretch nearly 1.5 times around the Earth!” explained Brandon LeBlanc, Windows Communications Manager at Microsoft.

Brandon LeBlanc provided another interesting statistic: as of January 2011, Windows 7 powers more than 20% of all internet-connected PCs in the world.
For those of you who like to keep track of these things, Microsoft announced back in January 2010 that it sold more than 60 million Windows 7 licenses (and made a profit of $6.66 billion, which some have called devilishly high). Then in March 2010, Microsoft announced that the number of Windows 7 licenses it sold went up and over the 90 million mark. Then in April 2010, precisely 6 months after the launch of Windows 7, Microsoft announced that it sold more than 100 million Windows licenses. In June Microsoft announced it sold more than 150 million Windows 7 Licenses, followed by the announcement that it sold 240 million Windows 7 licenses, announcement made on Windows 7’s 1st anniversary.
Back in January 2009 Craig Beilinson, Director of Marketing with Microsoft’s Entertainment and Devices Division, said Windows 7 is “by far the fastest selling operating system in history.” This fact is confirmed by the huge number of Windows 7 licenses Microsoft sold, and it is confirmed by Chief Operating Officer with Microsoft, Keving Turner, who said “Windows 7 continues to be the fastest-growing operating system in history.”
