More than 50 Million Uses Enjoy Opera Mini
Opera Mini once again makes the headlines. Opera Software, the company behind the mobile browser announced that Opera Mini is the world’s most popular mobile browser. Proof of that is the fact that in January 2010 more than 50 million unique users surfed the web with Opera Mini. Keep in mind that there are a multitude of mobile browsers to choose from. Out of all those options, more than 50 million users decided to go with Opera Mini.

“Our original goal with Opera Mini was to make the Web available to everyone, regardless of their network or mobile phone. Fifty million active monthly users is a great start,” says Lars Boilesen, CEO, Opera. “Opera’s innovative nature and its popularity among users will help us make the mobile Web even more accessible and attractive to more people across the world.”

To put things in perspective, the number of monthly unique users in January 2009 was of 20 million. In January 2010 that number has increased to 50 million monthly unique users. That is an increase of 150%. Please note that the figures represent users that actively use Opera Mini, not users who downloaded the mobile browser and forgot about it the next day.

Opera Mini recently made the headlines when Opera Software announced it would unveil Opera Mini for iPhone at the 2010 Mobile World Congress (MWC). The mobile browser promises to offer up to 6 times faster download speeds, and up to 10 times smaller data traffic – amongst other things. It remains to be seen if Apple will welcome the mobile browser into the App Store. Opera is confident the Cupertino-based software developer will not “will not deny their users a choice in Web browser experience.” The rest of the world doesn’t share Opera’s enthusiasm.

In further Opera-related news, the company just released the Beta version of Opera 10.5. This browser version offers a minimalist UI, the option to run widgets outside the browser, a private browsing feature, and increased JavaScript performance. Opera Software says the Carakan JavaScript engine in Opera 10.5 Beta is 8 times faster than the Futhark JavaScript engine in Opera 10.10.
