Do you remember that in the good old US of A, the whole month of June is National Internet Safety Month? All month long US citizens are offered the opportunity to learn about the dangers of the internet and what they could do stay safe and secure online. It is an entire month during which awareness on the dangers of the internet is promoted.
Popular video sharing site YouTube kicked things off last week by spotlighting videos that focus on how to stay safe online and by drawing attention to the tools it offers, tools that help you stay safe on the ideo sharing site. Yahoo! now joins in by releasing a few interesting findings from a recent survey – and by giving parents a B+ for their efforts to protect their children as they surf the web.

“Online safety is always top-of-mind at Yahoo!, and to honor June as National Internet Safety Month, we are sharing interesting data from a recent survey of 2000 U.S. Internet users to gain insight into consumers’ behaviors and perceptions around online safety. The survey data provides insight into how parents monitor children’s online behavior and how people manage their personal reputations online. As a result, we are giving parents a B+ for taking action to protect children online, with a special shout-out to dads!” explained Katherine Teitelbaum, Yahoo!’s Director of Child Safety and Product Policy
Here are the key findings of the study: - 70% of parents talk to their children 2-3 times per year about online safety. - 45% of parents talk to their children once a month about online safety. - 74% of parents are connected to their children’s profile on social networking sites - 74% of parents took at least one action to manage the child’s internet use - 71% of dads take at least one action to help manage their children’s online behavior. Dads check the child’s privacy settings and talk to the child about respecting the privacy of others. - 53% of dads use a search engine and query their child’s name at least 2-3 times per year. - 33% of dads use a search engine and query their child’s name at least once a month.
Yahoo! used this occasion to provide some advice on how to manage your online image and keep your children safe. Here’s what Yahoo! said in brief: - Do no connect with people you never met offline. Know who your connections are. - Think twice before posting something online. Once something is out there, you cannot take it back. - Do not reveal personal information to people you don’t know; do not reveal personal information to people unless you are friends with them offline. - Understand the profile settings available to you on social networks and other websites. Set these settings up according to your needs. - Understand that you leave a digital footprint, so at least once a month, query your name. This allows you to see what type of content is associated to your name.
“The reality is that we live in a digital world where our photos, videos, words, and actions continue to live online long after they are originally communicated. With the continued growth of the Web — particularly social networking sites — digital-reputation concerns will also continue to grow. We applaud the parents who are taking an active role in keeping their kids safe online, and we encourage parents to use Yahoo! Safely as a resource for relevant, up-to-date strategies and tools to help foster safer online experiences for their families,” added Catherine Teitelbaum.
