Redmond-based software giant Microsoft has recently announced that it added a new app to the library of Bing Maps applications. The app I am talking about is called Coin Search and the fun thing is that it is no ordinary app – Coin Search is in fact a game. A “fun exploring game” as explained by Chris Pendleton.
“The latest Bing Map App in the gallery, Coin Search, lets us explore Bing Maps in Streetside to find random coins throughout beautiful New York City. Four areas have been marked on the map; inside each of these areas there are five randomly distributed coins. Find all of the coins in each area to win the game. Yes! It’s a Bing Maps game!” commented Bing Maps Technical Evangelist, Chris Pendleton.

Here is what you have to do to start playing the Coin Search game: - To get started with the Coin Search app, all you have to do is click here (Microsoft Silverlight required) - Once you’re on the Bing Maps site and the Coin Search app has loaded, you have to click the “Begin” button. - From the left hand panel click an area; or hover over an area on the map. To enter Streetside you then have to click the area’s name. - Once in Streetside, walk around and keep an eye out for spinning coins. Once you locate a spinning coin, click it to collect it. Walking around is a fairly simple process – all you have to do is use the directional arrows on your keyboard. - You will be taken out of Streetside once you find all the coins in a certain area. You will then be able to select another area and start the coin search over again.
There is one more thing you need to know about the Coin Search app: besides being a game, it is also a code sample. As long as you have a Windows Live ID, you can download the code the Coin Search game from Microsoft Connect. “The whole idea is to show you how to render images and use advanced features such as the Streetside interface and isolated storage in Bing Map Apps,” added Pendleton.
