New Bing Maps Application: Bing Health Maps
Bing Health Maps is the newcomer to the library of Bing Maps applications. The application uses data from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to help you make more informed decisions related to health. To be more specific, it will allow you to overlay health data onto Bing Maps so you can better understand and visualize the health of a community.

The application covers the entire good old US of A. At a county level, the application displays statistical information about health. Let’s say you want to move – you can use the application to see if the new location meets your health requirements.

“Deciding where you live is a complex task that involves weighing many quality of life factors. We think understanding the relative healthiness of an area to live is one of those key factors but that information is often challenging to find and understand. We’re thrilled to support HHS and the Institute of Medicine in making health information more accessible and meaningful to help people make healthier decisions,” commented Dr. Alain T. Rappaport, General Manager of Health Search in the Bing group at Microsoft Corp.

Using the Bing Health app is a rather straightforward process. Here’s how it all goes:
- To get started with the Bing Health Maps application, please click here.
- Select a state
- Select a community Health Indicator: Birth Indicators, Death Measure, or Health Risk Factors.
- The map will re-center on the respective state and color-code the counties within that state based on unit-based reporting.
- Click a specific county and a popup will appear.

“Using the Bing Health Map App allows for a great, quick views of the different counties around the U.S. How useful would this be in only tabular form? Well, certainly not as easy to distinguish the problem areas compared with neighboring counties with the simple click of the mouse. It’s all about multiple layers of data, right at your fingertips and easy to see,” commented Bing Maps Technical Evangelist, Chris Pendleton.
