New Bing Maps Application: Global Action Atlas by National Geographic
The team behind Bing Maps has recently announced that one more application has been added to the library of Bing Maps applications. The new addition is called the Global Action Atlas – it is an application created by National Geographic that is meant to make it a lot easier for people all over the world to access information on humanitarian and ecological initiatives.

“The application allows users to peer into areas where our planet needs help. National Geographic and Bing Maps invite you to support efforts across the globe to help people in need, protect plants and animals, preserve diverse cultures, and more. Join thousands of others who are donating, volunteering, and sharing knowledge on behalf of community-based projects working to solve global challenges,” explained Bing Maps Technical Evangelist, Chris Pendleton.

The application, as Pendleton explained, is very easy to use. The interface provides several boxes that you can check to see efforts of interest. There are 6 actionable themes with subcategories:

1. Conservation – Conserve species, ecosystems and water
Categories on animals, plants, fresh water, landscapes, migrations and so on are included.

2. Humanitarian – Improve the health and well-being of people
Projects that focus on sanitation, water, health, education, poverty, hunger and emergency relief are included.

3. Cultures – Preserve cultures and archeological sites
Projects on preserving endangered languages, projects on cultural preservation, archeology, indigenous rights and so on are featured.

4. Exploration – Discover uncharted places and knowledge
Explore the planet’s mysteries though sustainable travel, raise awareness about environments and cultures, take action to preserve the planet.

5. Climate Change – Reduce and adapt to climate change
The focus here falls on projects related to forest conservation and management, reforestation, renewable energy and so on.

6. Energy – Providing power for a sustainable future

Here the focus fall on energy investment and energy efficiency.

“National Geographic is offering you the opportunity to really make a difference in the world and see places first-hand where you can take action to help,” added Pendleton. “Just find the location where you’d like to help or the theme you’d like to help with, click the respective and icon and in the popup click the “Read More” link. Donations made to projects and organizations on the Atlas go through the GlobalGiving Foundation, a registered 501(c)3 organization.”
