Opera 10.53 Beta for Linux and FreeBSD
Recently the Opera Software team announced that it would drop support for Solaris, the UNIX operating system introduced by Sun Microsystems in 1992 as the successor to SunOS. At the time the team said it would continue to support Linux and FreeBSD, because these are the team’s favorite UNIX-like environments.

Opera Software has shown it support for its-s favorite UNIX-like environments by releasing Opera 10.53 for Linux and FreeBSD. Check out the download link at the bottom. Please note that this is a beta version – hence it comes with all the regular bet warnings.

Here is what you can expect to get from Opera 10.5. Beta for Linux and FreeBSD:
- Faster than previous releases. The new Carakan JavaScript Engine in Opera 10.53 is more than 8 times faster than Opera 10.10.
- Better integration with KDE and Gnome desktops.
- Full support for skinning.
- Private browsing mode.
- New zoom slider.
- Widgets can work outside the browser.
- Opera Turbo ensures you speedily browse the web, even when you’re on a congested network (like at the airport or on a train). This feature can boost surfing speeds up to 50% on 3G networks and up to 65% on Edge.
- Reworked user interface. The UI integrated with GNOME/GTK or KDE libraries
- New End User License agreement for Opera 10.53 for Linux. “Linux has always been a priority at Opera, as many people within our own walls are devoted users,” said Jon von Tetzchner, co-founder, Opera Software. “It was important for us in this release to make alterations to our terms of usage, in order to make Opera even easier to distribute on Linux.”

“If you've been waiting for Opera 10.5 to stabilize before trying it on your Linux or FreeBSD system, now is your chance. Try it and keep reporting any issues you have, help us make this the best release for Unix ever!” commented Opera’s Arjan van Leeuwen.
