Opera 11 Alpha Features Extensions, New Installer
Norwegian software developer Opera Software, best known for the Opera web browser, has recently rolled out an early Alpha version of Opera 11. As announced earlier this month, Opera 11 Alpha comes with support for extensions. Extensions are small pieces of software based on the W3C Widget specifications that add new functionality to the browser.

Developers can easily create extensions using supported APIs and open standards like HTML5, CSS, and JavaScript, while users can easily install extensions by clicking an extension and then clicking “Install” in the small window that shows up. Extensions are great because they add features and functionality directly into the browser itself, rather than as standalone Opera Widgets or Opera Unite applications.

“Opera has always been customizable, but now you can personalize your browser in a new way through Opera extensions,” said Jon von Tetzchner, Co-founder, Opera. “We take pride in introducing new features to the browser. Now, other developers can join in the fun and share their innovations with millions of people. Everyone using Opera 11 will be able to personalize their browser in myriad ways, which opens up so many possibilities for making the Web a more personal experience.”

Moving on, Opera 11 Alpha also features a new installer, which is Opera’s new default installer – the classic installer and the MSI installer have been discontinued. You now have the option to install the Opera browser on an external, portable device. If instead of clicking “Accept and install” you click the “Options” button you can select the “External device” option and install the browser on an, well, external device. This is great news for users who are constantly on the go and want to take Opera with them on an USB flash drive for example.
