Opera Drops Support for Solaris
Norwegian software developed Opera Software has recently announced that its web browser will no longer provide support for Solaris, the UNIX operating system introduced by Sun Microsystems in 1992 as the successor to SunOS. Opera Software will not be dropping support for Linux of FreeBSD.

“In order to ensure a consistently high quality browser across our most popular desktop platforms we have reluctantly decided to drop support for Solaris. This will allow our UNIX development team to focus all of their attention on bringing Opera for Linux and FreeBSD up to final release quality, meaning that a 10.5x release for these platforms will happen as soon as feasibly possible,” explained a member of the Opera Desktop Team, Ruari Ødegaard.

He went on to say that the Opera development team’s favorite UNIX-like environments are Linux and FreeBSD. Consequently support for these operating systems will definitely not be dropped – quite the opposite. Because the members of the development team are big fans of these UNIX-like environments, they find the process of supporting them a lot easier.

“Please be assured that we have no plans to drop support for either Linux or FreeBSD. These are the preferred UNIX-like environments of our development team and hence fully supporting a browser on these Operating Systems is more straightforward,” added Ruari Ødegaard.

In related news, Opera Software has recently released Opera version 10.53 to Windows and Mac users alike. The update fixes a security vulnerability where multiple asynchronous document modifications could be used to execute arbitrary code. Opera Software classified this vulnerability as “extremely critical”. All Opera 10.52 users are advised to update the browser to the latest version. Opera 10.52 has been released as a final, stable version to Window and Mac users last week. It comes with several under the hood enhancements that make is very fast – on the Mac front for example v. 10.52 is ten times faster than version 10.10.
