Back in December the development team behind the popular VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) application announced the release of Skype 4.2 for Windows – as a Beta. You can forget about the Beta now because Skype has announced the release of Skype 4.2 Final. If you jumped on the Beta train back in December, you need to upgrade. If you didn’t because you though a Beta is not safe enough for you, now is the time to get Skype 4.2.

First of all you should know that call transfer is back. With this feature you can transfer calls to a Skype contact for free. You can also transfer calls to a landline or mobile phone, but you’ll have to pay a fee (a small one). You should also know that Skype 4.2 for Windows adds Skype Access to its lists of features. With Skype Access you can pay for the minute for WiFi access. Use your Skype Credit, go online and send an email message or make a Skype call. You no longer have to go searching for your credit card and fiddle with login details to access a WiFi network.
Speaking of calls, Skype 4.2 is HD-ready. Skype’s Peter Parkes explains: “4.2 includes almost everything you’ll need to make HD video calls using Skype. As soon as special HD cameras appear in a couple of months’ time, you’ll be able to call your family and friends in crystal clear HD.”
The list of improvements in Skype 4.2 for Windows continues with these other bits and pieces: a new Call Quality indicator, the way Skype works with the new taskbar has been enhanced, a better first run experience, better compatibility with the Windows 7 system tray, numerous bug fixes.
