Earlier today we reported that the Wolfram Alpha for Android app has been released and is available for download on the T-Mobile Channel and Android Market (the app is compatible with Android 1.6 and later; it costs $1.99). Now we are pleased to report that Skype for Android has been released as well.

Skype for Android, an app that is compatible with Android 2.1 or later, is available for download free of charge on the Android Market, or as Parkes explained above, by visiting skype.com/m. Skype explained that the app has been tested on HTC and Motorola phones running Android 2.1
The app allows you to do all the bits you can do on the desktop version of Skype. You can make free Skype-to-Skype calls over WiFi or 3G (only WIFi in the US), make cheap calls to landline and mobile phones, send and receive instant messages, see when Skype contacts are online, receive calls to your the Skype online number.
Skype for Android also lets you import names and numbers to the Skype application from your Android-powered device’s native address book. The app can also sync contacts between Skype and the native address book and after synchronization place Skype calls directly from the native address book.
“The Skype experience is ubiquitous today. More and more people are using Skype to do things together when apart. With the addition of Android, we are pleased that Skype is now available on three of the most popular mobile platforms today: Android, iOS and Symbian,” explained Mark Douglas, Product Manager of Android.
The first time you log into your Skype account from your Android-powered device, you will see your full contact list – that is if you already have a Skype account. If you don’t have one, you can easily create an account from the app.
