Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop Edition Coming Tomorrow
Canonical, the company behind the popular Ubuntu operating system, has announced that come tomorrow, the 29th of April, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop Edition will be rolled out to the public. Alongside Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop Edition, Canonical will also release Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server Edition.

According to Canonical, Ubuntu 10.04 LTS features extensive design work, faster boot speed, social network integration, online services, Ubuntu Software Centre 2.0, Ubuntu One, and the Ubuntu One Music Store. Support in the form of free security updates and maintenance updates will be provided for a period of 3 years.



"Ubuntu 10.04 LTS challenges the perceptions of the Linux desktop, bringing a whole new category of users to the world of Ubuntu," said Jane Silber, CEO, Canonical. "Changes like the new look and feel and the addition of a music store, layered on top of our relentless focus on delivering an intuitive and attractive user experience for new and existing Ubuntu users -- these are the bridging elements to the mainstream market that our community, our partners and our users really want. Long-term support makes Ubuntu 10.04 LTS very attractive to corporate IT as well."

Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop Edition highlights:
  • Speed – On just about all systems, Ubuntu 10.04 is faster that previous versions. On SSD-based machines, it is super-fast.
  • Socially oriented – Ubuntu 10.04 features a new “Me Menu” that provides easy access to social networks like Twitter and Facebook. There are also chat channels in the Me Menu that allow the user to talk to friends on MSN, IRCn Google Talk, and other networks.
  • Ubuntu One – Thanks to this service Ubuntu 10.04 users can save files to the cloud and the can share files and folders with others. For free Ubuntu One offers 2GB of storage space. For $10 per month it offers 50GB.
  • Ubuntu One Music Store – Here users can find music from the world's largest labels and greatest bands. The Ubuntu One Music Store can be accessed through the Rhythmbox Music Player
  • Ubuntu Software Centre 2.0 – In a new, sleek interface the Software Centre is an easy way for users to find new software and monitor said software once it has been installed.
