Come tomorrow, the 29th of April, Canonical will make the final, stable version of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server Edition available to the awaiting public. As usual, the software is provided free of charge. Alongside of Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server Edition, the company will also roll out Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Desktop Edition .
Canonical will continue to provide support for Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server Edition for a period of 5 years (or 60 months if you prefer). For standard releases, Canonical provides support for only a year and a half (18 months). Here are the main bits and pieces you can expect to get from Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server Edition:
Direct upgrade path for Ubuntu 8.04 LTS and Ubuntu 9.10 users – In-place upgrades means you no longer have to rip and replace
Stability and security enhancements – AppArmor security by default on key packages, kernel hardening, firewall extended to all common services, encrypted Home and Private directories.
Multiple added or updated applications and packages since 8.04 LTS available as install options – SpamAssassin, Ruby, PowerNap, CouchDB, Puppet, Eucalyptus, ClamAv, and many more.
Virtualization enhancements
Ubuntu Enterprise Cloud (UEC) and Amazon EC2 enhancements
Built-in advanced storage capabilities
Easier to mass deploy and manage

About 100 organizations, including VMare, IBM, Zimbra and Yahoo!, have already expressed their intent to certify their applications on Ubuntu Server edition. Many more are expected to join in once Ubuntu 10.04 LTS Server Edition is rolled out. This means that Ubuntu Server Edition will see the largest ecosystem of open-source and proprietary application providers ever.
