This is not the first time the Wolfram Alpha app goes on sale. The app went on sale this August as well (from August 27 until September 12) as part of a back-to-school promotion.
Speaking of price, you may remember that back in 2009, when the app was released to the public , it cost a staggering $49.99. The app’s price was lowered to $1.99 back in April, 2010; Wolfram Alpha even offered refunds to all the users who bought the app for $49.99.
Why would you want to get the Wolfram Alpha for iPhone or the Wolfram Alpha for Android app? Simply because it puts the power of the Wolfram Alpha computational knowledge engine at your fingertips.
Here are some highlights to better put things in perspective:
The app is connected to Wolfram Alpha’s supercomputing cloud. This allows it to bring the Wolfram Alpha knowledge engine experience to the mobile user.
It can be used by pretty much anyone, but the team at Wolfram Alpha highlighted these category of users in particular: financial analysts, physicians, scientists, engineers, students, teachers, journalists, parents, economists, nutritionists, systems analysts, marketing managers, pilots, sportsmen.
The app’s user interface is specially designed for the iPhone/iPad/Android. The iPhone version comes with a special notation keyboard, customized iPhone output, editable history, and it integrates with native iPhone services (like Maps). The iPad version comes with specialized keyboards, output tuned for the iPad's screen, copy/paste support, and integration with maps and other iPad services. The Android version comes with specialized keyboards for math, charts and graphics adapted for the variety of Android screens, support for native voice input, and location awareness.
